History
Originally chartered in 1956, Kent County Credit Union was established to provide financial services to the employees of Kent County. In January of 1956, we had seven members with $1,244 in assets. Currently, we serve over 6,000 members and have
expanded our field of membership to include anyone who lives, works, worships or attends post-secondary education in Kent County.
Today, we remain dedicated to our member-owners by providing a full-service financial institution grounded in the credit union philosophy of people helping people.
We work diligently to offer progressive products and services to meet our members' ever changing needs in a friendly, down-to-earth manner. From savings and checking, credit cards and auto loans, to online banking and bill payment, we strive to meet our members' requirements for handling their finances.
Why a credit union?
A credit union is a not-for-profit, member-owned, financial cooperative entirely operated by and for its members. Unlike banks, credit unions do not have shareholders who own stock. Our owners are our members which is why they are referred to as a member, not a customer.
The board of directors at a credit union are volunteers, meaning they don't get paid for providing direction to the credit union. Also, as a member you have the right to vote for the directors.
The credit union idea of self-help monetary services was created in the mid-19th century and in 1909 the first U.S. credit union was established. Today, almost 85 million Americans are credit union members. So, when you say, "Kent County CU is my credit union", you really mean it!"
